College Cartoonists: Apply For The Jay Kennedy Scholarship

apply now for jay kennedy scholarship If you’re a college cartoonist and in the market for a once-in-a-lifetime scholarship, we’ve got an incredible opportunity for you. Entries are being accepted until December 15 for the National Cartoonists Society Foundation’s Jay Kennedy scholarship, created in memory of the late King Features editor.

Applicants must be students at a 4-year college in the U.S., Canada or Mexico who will be juniors or seniors during the 2013-14 academic year. Although you’re asked to submit examples of your cartooning work, you don’t need to be an art major to be eligible for the scholarship.

Interested in applying? Here’s what you need to submit:

  • A completed application form
  • Eight examples of your own cartooning artwork. Put all examples onto a CD and print paper copies, too. The scholarship submissions board asks that no original examples be included.

Your application package must be postmarked by December 15. Send to The Jay Kennedy Memorial Scholarship, c/o the National Cartoonists Society Foundation, 341 N. Maitland Avenue, Ste 130, Maitland, FL, 32751.

The award will be given to the best college cartoonist, who will be honored at the annual NCS Reuben Awards Convention, an opportunity to meet many of the world’s leading cartoonists.

The scholarship is a huge honor—not just because of the financial gift that it gives the recipient, but also because of the opportunities it offers. Don’t just take it from us—past winner Juana Medina shares her experience on the NCFS blog:

“Imagine for a moment, finding yourself surrounded by cartoonists you admire, comic creators you have read since you were learning to read,” she writes. “Imagine them greeting you and making you feel part of the family. Imagine, they tell you they’ve also had similar fears to yours, they are willing to generously share their experiences, their dreams and their obstacles, and even their inspiration and work dynamics. I did not ever imagine this could be possible, until I found myself, in New Orleans, surrounded by renowned cartoonists and comic creators, all sharing their experiences and generously giving their advice.”

So what are you waiting for? Apply now and you just might find yourself on the receiving end of this incredible honor. For all of you who decide to apply, we wish you the best of luck!
