#BraveGirlsWant To Empower Women—And You Can Help

#bravegirlswant When I heard about the #BraveGirlsWant movement from the Brave Girls Alliance, I knew that my team and I had to do all that we could to spread the word and support the initiative.

The Brave Girls Alliance is (as described on their Indiegogo page) “a group of people who dedicate their lives to the empowerment and well being of girls. We are girls, businesses, experts, not-for-profit organizations, activists, parents and educators.” The #BraveGirlsWant movement is committed to bringing about change in the ways media portrays women and girls and in the choices they offer them in entertainment and toys.

They had me from the get-go and, of course, I wanted to be a part of the whole #BraveGirlsWant movement. Affecting change? Especially with regard to media portrayal of women and girls? It’s a lofty goal–but such an incredibly important one. And that’s where the biggest questions of all come in—how will they do it and how can we collectively help?

Not only can you help—you can also make your voice heard in a big, big way. You can ask for change and watch it happen.

The #BraveGirlsWant Indiegogo campaign (think Kickstarter) is raising money to purchase billboard space and time on the world’s biggest stage – Times Square in New York City – to make their voices, your voices, and the voices of brave girls everywhere heard. Because Times Square is one of the most highly-trafficked, visible places in the world, #BraveGirlsWant can reach a huge audience of consumers, and get the attention of media and toy companies as well.

How will it work? Here’s what the Brave Girls Alliance says: “Over the course of 7 days, curated tweets and messages from our communities will be displayed on a billboard on Times Square. We will take up 4 minutes per hour from 6 a.m. to 2 a.m. This will enable us to display 40 messages/tweets per hour.”

Can you imagine? If the voices of #BraveGirlsWant supporters everywhere were displayed on the world’s largest stage for millions to see, over a week’s time? What an impact that could have on media and toy companies! What an impact it could have on our daughters and granddaughters and nieces and sisters and girlfriends and neighbors.

How can you help? The #BraveGirlsWant Indiegogo campaign is not yet fully funded. To make your brave voice heard, simply support the effort financially, and your #BraveGirlsWant tweets can be featured on the Times Square billboard for all the world to see! The campaign has only 8 days left to raise the needed funds, so now is the time to step up and give.

Are you a brave girl? What do YOU want to say to media and toy companies about what you want them to change? I hope you’ll take a minute to lend your support to the #BraveGirlsWant campaign, to give whatever you might be able to give, to lend your voice to supporting the initiative and to do something to affect change in the way the media portrays women and girls and the way companies market to women and girls. We can do it, together.

Want to help? Great! Here’s how you can donate now.
